MIDI files can be played directly from the Web or converted to QuickTime movies with QuickTime. For this you will need the necessary sound cards in your computer and the QuickTime Musical Instruments in your extensions folder.
QuickTime is Apple's multi-platform, industry-standard, multimedia software architecture. It is used by software developers, hardware manufacturers, and content creators to author and publish synchronized graphics, sound, video, text, music, VR, and 3D media.
If you have QuickTime Pro, you can change the instruments in the QuickTime files. On a Mac, go to the Movie Menu, choose Get Movie Info or Movie Properties. A window will open with a dropdown menu on the left. Choose Music Track. Then choose Instruments from the drop down menu on the right.
Other MIDI players and plug-ins are available.
Software to unzip files can be found here.
There are many notation programs to create readable music from midi files.
